Awareness: Rope and Water Rescue
This 8 hour classroom seminar introduces personnel to the problems associated with water & rope rescue as well as the procedures to follow in flash flood, large-scale disaster, and seasonal flooding situations. The course is designed to develop knowledge in the areas of:
- scene assessment & incident size up (of both existing & potential conditions) resource ordering activation procedures for rescue response site control and scene management
- hazard recognition & mitigation procedures
In order to accomplish the responsibilities of the awareness level responder, the course also provides students with a conceptual understanding of the principles, applications, and hazards associated with advanced water rescue techniques.

Awareness: Basic First Responder
This 8-10 hour course is designed for response teams who work around lakes, ponds, or other non-flowing water. The class consists of 4 hours of classroom instruction and 4 hours of in-water practice. During the water portion students learn such things as:
- basic rescue self-rescue shore-based aquatic rescue using generally accepted"reach,
throw" techniques in-water self-rescue and safety techniques the application of water rescue techniques using commonly
available fire service equipment
- basic water-related medical emergencies, and how to deal with them, including near-drowning, hypothermia, and cervical spine injuries basic boat-based rescue concerns and techniques

Course Notes: While this class meets the NFPA requirements for the awareness level, its goes well beyond the scope of the awareness level by leaching students self-rescue' and in-water rescue techniques. It is up to the Authority Having Jurisdiction to decide whether or not personnel may perform these skills during water incidents.

Operations: Swiftwater First Responder
This two-day course is designed to provide students with both a theoretical iind practical knowledge of the basics of swiftwater rescue. The class includes one day of classroom instruction and one day of practical field exercise. Students are trained in hazard recognition, equipment use, and basic shore and boat-based rescue techniques, as well as a wide variety of other skills, including:
- accepted criteria for determining risk/benefit decisions
- effecting a shore-based aquatic rescue using generally accepted reach and throw techniques
- in-water self-rescue and safety techniques
- how to deal with basic water-related medical emergencies
- understanding the application of water rescue techniques using commonly available fire service equipment
- basic boat-based rescue concerns and techniques
- basic moving water self-rescue techniques

Course Notes: After completing the course, certified personnel may participate in higher risk, technical water rescues under the supervision of technician level rescuers.
Operations Level: Technical Rope Rescue
This is a 24 hour course which provides students with the fundamentals of rope rescue. The class consists of one day of classroom instruction followed by two days of practical field exercise. Students learn and practice all areas of rope rescue in a low-angle environment and are trained in such skills as:
- preplanning and size-up of rope rescue operations knots, hitches, and anchor systems belay operations ascending and descending lines mechanical advantage systems raising anil lowering systems
- patient packaging & litter attending

WHITEWATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN (WRT) FOR THE RIVER PROFESSIONAL
The Whitewater Rescue Technician (WRT) course is for people who either work or recreate on or around the river. Professional river guides, fishing guides and Fish and Wildlife personnel, park service employees, and private boaters will find this course applicable to all their needs. Fire and rescue personnel should take the NFPA-compliant Swiftwater Rescue Technician 1 (SRT1) course.
The course is two and one-half days long with the first four to six hours classroom instruction. It consists of intensive training using techniques and simple equipment to assess and perform river rescues. The emphasis of the class is on fast, low-tech and improvised rescue techniques.
Equipment requirements:
• full wetsuit or drysuit
• lightweight water or kayaking helmet
• USCG Type III or V approved lifejacket/PFD
• thick-soled water booties or tennis shoes
• gloves are optional but helpful in cold weather

Whitewater Rescue Technician 2
This two-day course builds on the skills learned in either SRT1 or WRT. The WRT2 course concentrates on further developing advanced water rescue skills, including managing the rescue scene, litter management and the utilization of teams. There is also a mock night rescue scenario.

NFPA 1670 Technical Level Training
Under the NFPA 1670 Standard requirements for water, a water, technician must be both a water and rope rescue technician. Therefore, RQ3's NFPA water technician program is broken down into three courses, SRTU1, TRR, SRTA
SWIFTWATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN 1 (SRT 1)
SRTU1 is the first of three classes needed for personnel to meet the requirements for the Technician level under NFPA 1670 and NFPA 1006 standards.
This intensive three-day course (24-30 hours) contains one day of classroom followed by two days of practical field exercise. The initial emphasis of the course is on developing and practicing self-rescue skills. Other objectives include an in-depth look at water dynamics, hazards and obstacles, using basic rescue equipment, setting up technical ropes systems, controlling in-water contact rescues, and much, much more. This is an essential course for anyone who may be required to perform a water rescue.
Students are provided with a course manual and skills sheet. Upon successful completion of course requirements and test, the student will receive a Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit 1™ (SRTU1) certificate, identification card and patch.

TECHNICAL ROPE RESCUE: TECHNICIAN LEVEL™ (TRR:TL)
TRR:TL meets the requirement for the Technician level for the NFPA 1670 for technical rope incidents and is the second of three courses necessary to meet the NFPA 1670 and NFPA 1006 standards for water. This five-day course includes one day of classroom instruction followed by four days of practical field exercise. Students will advance from basic over-the-bank rescues to progressively more difficult vertical scenarios. Students are trained in pre-planning and size-up of rope rescue operations; knots, hitches and anchor systems; belay operations; ascending and descending; raising and lower systems; and patient packaging and litter tending. This course also covers advanced problem solving and highline systems. Special emphasis is placed on safety considerations for rescuers, victims and bystanders.

• Willingness to participate in hands-on activities

SWIFTWATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN ADVANCED™ (SRTA)
This course is the third class necessary for personnel wanting to meet the requirements for NFPA 1670 and NFPA 1006 standards at the Technician level. This course incorporates what the student learned in SRTU1 and TRR:TL and moves beyond the previous emphasis on self-rescue to further concentrate on rescuing the victim.
This three-day course incorporates four to six hours of classroom instruction, followed by two and one-half days of practical field exercise, including a mock night river rescue scenario. The night scenario takes place at dark on the second or third evening and lasts until its successful conclusion.
Topics covered include preplanning; rescue and recovery management; flood specific problems; techniques for performing rescues in class IV-VI whitewater; raising/lowering systems; litter management; cliff picket anchors; "A" frames; tripod setups; night rescue; and much more.

• Completion of SRTU1 within past 3 years
• Completion of TRR:TL within past 3 years*
• At least 18 years of age

Kayaking Class
QuickStart Your Kayak QuickStart is a brief, three-hour introduction to paddling a kayak. Students are presented with basic information on dressing to paddle safely, potential hazards and simple rescues. A minimal paddle skill set is presented and practiced, allowing students to safely and comfortably maneuver on still water. While designed as a stand-alone, introductory course, QuickStart students often progress to the Introduction to Kayak course to acquire greater paddling skill through significantly more guided, on-water practice time.
Intro to Kayaking (Level 1) Intro to Kayak is a six-hour course focusing on skills needed for any type of kayak including but not limited to sit on tops, recreational, folding and inflatable. Presentations include dressing to paddle safely and potential paddling hazards. Simple rescues are demonstrated by the instructor combined with the paddling skills practiced by students to maneuver safely and comfortably on still water. Designed as a stand-alone course, students desiring more intensive skills would proceed to Essentials of Coastal Kayaking or Basic Coastal Kayaking as successive courses, depending on interest and kayak type. Essentials of River Kayaking (Level 2) Essentials to River Kayak course is designed to give the student the necessary tools needed to travel down a moving river (up to Class I) from point A to point B. They will be presented with information on river hazards and features, strokes and basic skills such as catching a large eddy, doing a gentle ferry, Great for camps, groups or individuals that want to do day trips down easy moving water rivers up to Class I. Designed as a stand-alone course, students desiring more intensive skills would proceed to the ACA Whitewater Kayaking course, depending on interest and hull type. Basic River Kayak (Level 3) Basic River Kayak course is designed to build on the tools needed to travel down a moving river (up to Class I) presented in teh Essentials course, including more emphasis on safety & rescue in class I rivers. Designed as a stand-alone course, students desiring more intensive skills would proceed to the ACA Whitewater Kayaking course, depending on interest and hull type. Whitewater Kayaking (Level 4) The ACA Whitewater Kayak Course is a two-day (16 hour) program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry-level through intermediate individuals in public, private and commercial settings. Instruction takes place on flatwater and rivers up to Class II whitewater. Designed as a stand-alone course, students desiring more intensive skills development would proceed to Advanced Whitewater Kayak, depending on interest and ability. PURPOSE - The ACA Moving Water Paddle Raft course is a minimum 20-hour program emphasizing safety, enjoyment, and skill acquisitions for new paddlers of inflatable craft. The course introduces and trains paddlers in the basic elements of river reading, moving water safety considerations, and paddling techniques. The program may be offered in public, private, and/or commercial settings. Private and group lessons can be arragened.
GOAL - Safety: To paddle moving water (Class I & II) safely, perform self-rescue and respond to emergencies that arise. To become aware of paddling opportunities and enjoy the rewards of lifetime participation in paddle rafting on moving water. To acquire the techniques, knowledge and skills needed to paddle a raft on moving water.
Prerequisites: A strong desire and ability to learn appropriate paddle skills, river etiquette, and river ethics.
Minimum Duration of Course: 20 hours (Instructors may lengthen the course at their discretion
Location: Class I & II river rapids
Raft Guide Training
- The ACA White Water Paddle Raft course is a minimum 32-hour program emphasizing safety, enjoyment, and skill acquisitions for new paddlers of inflatable craft. The course introduces and trains paddlers in the basic elements of river reading, White Water safety considerations, and paddling techniques. The program may be offered in public, private, and/or commercial settings. Spokane River Rescue's Course meets Wahsington State RCWs.
GOAL - Safety: To paddle White Water (Class I -I II) safely, perform self-rescue and respond to emergencies that arise. To become aware of paddling opportunities and enjoy the rewards of lifetime participation in paddle rafting on White water. To acquire the techniques, knowledge and skills needed to paddle a raft on White Water. Prerequisites: A strong desire and ability to learn appropriate paddle skills, river etiquette, and river ethics.
